The USF School of Architecture and Community Design and the Franciscan Center are collaborating on a design/build project that serves as the vehicle for hands-on learning experiences in the community. Located on the Hillsborough River just north of downtown Tampa, the Franciscan Center offers an environment of peace, simplicity and hospitality for all those seeking spiritual renewal.

Virtual Model

The design-build team has proposed an open-air riverside pavilion which capitalizes on the innate beauty of the site for an array of functions: meditation, prayer, spiritual direction, theater, music, dance, seating for small and large groups. The austere merger of geometries in the design of the structure allows the Franciscan Center to shape the space for each use, creating singular moments for individuals (along the low walls), small groups (under the canopy),  and large groups (into the semi-circular yard) alike.

Site Plan

The collaboration has expanded to include engineers, building contractors, and building material suppliers who are generously co-sponsoring the project through in-kind donations. These donations have largely helped to define the primary design materials - a painted steel frame covered with a standing seam metal roof, composite wood lattice screen walls, and concrete site walls and floor slabs. Tile wall cladding and brick pavers will recognize our business sponsors and individual donors.

Enlarged Site Plan

During the design process, students worked within the collaborative team to program, design, and document their proposal for the pavilion. The design process included scheduling, cost estimating, engineering coordination, and ordinance/code reviews.
